Back to School
Tomorrow Matty will be starting first grade. (Eep!) He's been looking forward to his first day literally 3 days after he finished Kindergarten. I just love seeing his excitement and the twinkle in his eyes when he talks about the new friends he'll be making, the activities he'll be doing in class and the future field trips he'll be going on.
There's a big part of me that feels assured that he won't have any issues making friends with his fun and energetic personality. But naturally, leading up to tomorrow I've been feeling lots of mixed emotions like anticipation, excitement, nervousness and sadness (that he's growing up so fast!). There's also those thoughts of whether or not his teacher will be a good fit for him or how the school will channel his energy in a classroom setting.
Then yesterday I opened my mailbox to find a colorful postcard sent by his first grade teacher. The front of the postcard read, "Welcome to 1st Grade" and in the back his teacher wrote,
"Dear Matthew,
Welcome to 1-C1. I am very excited to be your teacher this year!
We are going to have a great time learning many new things! See you soon!"

I'm telling you the Big Man upstairs is funny. Right then I felt assured that everything will be okay and thankful for such a thoughtful teacher. I was reminded to embrace, rejoice and share in this new season in Matty's life. That he's got this and HE'S got this.
For all you parents who have already sent their kids off to school or are about to send them off, you're not alone and you've got this!
* On a random note, one of the back-to-school traditions I started with Matty was leaving silly "knock, knock jokes" in his lunch box so at least once during the school day he gets a good laugh.
What are some traditions you started with your child?

Thanks for this. I'm finding myself getting emotional that the boys have already been in elementary school for two whole years! The only tradition I have is to tell my boys, who have a tendency to struggle with perfectionism and not being able to ask for help, that it is their job to make mistakes this year and then to try again. I also tell them everyday before school, "Do you know how special you are to mommy, daddy, and God? Then act that way." And we have lots of conversations about what it means to act like you're loved. :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE how you affirm them every morning and have these meaningful conversations with the boys! I may have to borrow this idea from you. Thanks for sharing, Debbie. xo
